Guadeloupe
c
alled the 'papillon' island because its two parts resemble a butterfly in flight, is situated in the archipelago that has Antigua, Barbuda, Montserrat and St.Kitts to the north and Barbados, Dominica, Martinique and St Lucia to the south.

The two parts of the island are named Basse Terre and Grande Terre and
are separated by a very narrow water channel. The names are somewhat confusing. Basse Terre, meaning ' low land', is actually the part with the mountain ranges and rain-forests that descend to exquisite beaches and coves.
